Shanti Project Volunteer Campaign Poster

From Eclipse Newsletters:

“The Shanti Project logo is an eclipse, a circle within a square. The circle portrays the inner world of the mind. The square conveys the solid reality of earth and body. United, they indicate the wholeness of the human Being.

An eclipse is the passage from light to darkness and the return to light. For Shanti Project, it represents the changes brought about by illness and death, the darkness that can fall upon people experiencing these events, and the light that can follow in the wake of helpers who bring love and caring.”

“I saw their posters up in the Castro. And it was…they were so powerful. But they were so ominous. It was…what’s it called? An eclipse…It’s such a heavy image and I remembered reading about their work and thinking ‘Who could do that? Who could possibly do that?””

-Gregg Cassin, Long term survivor and HIV activist, Shanti HIV Services counselor since 2013. Interview, July 2016.

“In 1982 I saw an ad in the newspaper for something called the Shanti Project. And it was a drawing of an eclipse so a dark sun with a light coming from all around it…And it said something like can you…could you be a volunteer to help our community during this dark time. Something like that. And they were holding the first ever AIDS volunteer training, this was July 1982. There was something going on in my life and I couldn’t-I sent the application in and I don’t know why I did it. I just…it spoke to me, somehow.”

-Ed Wolf, Shanti volunteer and staff member, 1983-1991.
