Shanti Project relocated from Berkeley to San Francisco in 1982. Shanti’s move to San Francisco occurred after Mayor Diane Feinstein was made aware of the work Shanti was doing for gay men with Kaposi’s Sarcoma. It was becoming evident that the disease that the city was witnessing grow could not be addressed solely through the Department of Public Health. Upon recommendation from various civic activists and medical professionals who had learned of the support groups for gay men with K.S. that were led by Jim Geary, Andrew Lewallen, Steve Peskind, and Larry Tate.
Shanti’s home in The Pride Center. A former convent with its original stained glass still intact, in the Fillmore District, right around the corner from the iconic Painted Ladies houses. It would conduct its volunteer training and day to day operations on the top floor of the Pride Center from then until 1987 when it relocated to its Howard Street location.
